Susan Smith Appointed as Chief of Police for Port Deposit
Port Deposit, MD – At the July 7, 2020 Council meeting, Susan Smith was appointed as Chief of Police for the Town of Port Deposit. Chief Smith has served as Acting Chief of Police since April 2019 pending law enforcement certification. Chief Smith successfully completed the Comparative Compliance Law Enforcement Training Program through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Academy.
The recommendation for the appointment was made by the Public Safety Committee after several months of meetings to evaluate the need for a part-time administrative law enforcement position. Chief Smith will continue evaluating and determining the resources and coverage needed to meet the needs of the community. Additionally, she will be developing a community policing initiative and serving as the point of contact for the community relative to public safety concerns and issues.
Chief Smith retired from the Maryland State Police in 2010 after twenty-four years of service. She started her career as a uniform patrol officer and moved to the Narcotics Unit. The last fifteen years of her career, she served as a criminal investigator in the Criminal Investigation Division. Chief Smith is committed to working in partnership with law enforcement departments, Fire Company, Emergency Medical Services and the community to identify and resolve issues that impact public safety.
“I am excited to be able to continue to serve the Town of Port Deposit. I feel policing is one of the noblest professions a person can undertake and it has incredible rewards and responsibilities.” Chief Smith said. “I will be accessible and open to the public and intend to represent the citizens of this town to meet their public safety needs and concerns.” Mayor Tome said, “The Public Safety Committee was appointed to evaluate the public safety needs of our Town. I fully support the appointment of Chief Smith, and look forward to the highest quality of public safety service for our citizens, businesses and visitors.”
Chief Smith’s office will be located in Town Hall, 64 S. Main Street, Port Deposit and she can be reached at 410.378.2121 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
