Port's John Smith 400 Celebration 07/10/2007

Port Deposit prepares for the John Smith 400 event

On Saturday 21st July 2007 the Town of Port Deposit will host one of the town’s largest celebrations ever. To coincide with the arrival of the Captain John Smith 400 Project's shallop, Port Deposit will be hosting a timeline event, with features re-enactors, artisans & living historians from the 1600's through to 1945.

There will be literally hundreds of exhibits featuring displays, encampments, recitals, re-enactments and music throughout the town.

The new Marina Park will become "Heritage Park" for the day, with a history timeline in date order from the John Smith 400 shallop towards the current century. The Marina Park will also have a main stage with live shows throughout the day, including rock, bluegrass, Celtic and chantey music, and Abbott and Costello. For children there will be several Punch and Judy shows, and live pirates walking throughout the town. It is anticipated that the English might visit the town by ship, threatening the town with cannon fire. It's rumored that the town might fire back!

The Town Hall will become the "Susquehanna Gallery" for the day, featuring local arts, including oils and water colors, textiles, photography, and bas relief.

In the Presbyterian Church there will be features on Native American artifacts, 17th and 18th century pottery, photography, colonial, civil war and Victorian music and an organ recital.

The Library will be showing videos throughout the day, including the history of the town, the history of Bainbridge, the history of Tome School, and, naturally, the Captain John Smith 400 project. The library will also host the USNTC Bainbridge Historical Association offering memorabilia for sale, displays and tickets to tour the former Bainbridge Naval Training Center from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Bainbridge group will also offer home cooked food sales in the architectural garden at the center of town.

People interested in genealogy might like to visit the historic bank building, which has been devoted to the subject. Meanwhile, the town square at Center Street will host vendors and musicians.

Parking is at Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company House #2 on Jacob Tome Highway, with free shuttle service into Port Deposit for the event that has been 400 years in the making!

Mark the date, Saturday July 21st, and come have fun at Port Deposit.
