About Port Deposit's Boards & Commissions

The Town of Port Deposit's boards and commissions are established under the authority of the Town Charter and Town Code. Members are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the Town Council, rather than elected. These groups ensure that the Town's governance remains transparent, well-planned, and responsive to the community.

​​​​Below is a list of the boards and commissions and a summary of their responsibilities.
Board of Appeals
The Board of Appeals hears and decides appeals of administrative decisions made under the Town's zoning and land-use regulations. They serve three-year terms.

​Responsibilities:

Hear appeals from decisions of the Zoning Inspector, Planning & Zoning Commission, or Town Administrator

Act on applications for variances or special exceptions as authorized by the Zoning Ordinance
​
Meetings:
The Board meets as needed when appeals or cases are filed.

Board of Supervisors of Elections
Town elections are overseen by the Board of Supervisors of Elections, which consists of three members, plus two alternates. They serve four-year terms.

Responsibilities:

Verify voter registration and maintain the list of qualified voters

Administer nomination procedures and election processes

Conduct all Town elections and certify the results
​
Meetings:
The Board meets as required for the administration of elections and certification of results.

Historic Area Commission
The Historic Area Commission (HAC) works to preserve and protect the character of Port Deposit's Historic District. They serve three-year terms.

Responsibilities:

Review applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for exterior changes or construction within the Historic District (as delineated on the official Zoning Map)

Ensure proposed work complies with adopted historic preservation standards
​
Meetings:
The Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm; meetings are cancelled if there are no applications to review or no business to discuss.

Planning & Zoning Commission
The Planning & Zoning Commission guides the Town's growth and development in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan and zoning regulations. They serve three-year terms.

Responsibilities:

Prepare and recommend to the Mayor and Town Council policies, ordinances, and plans related to land use, zoning, and community development

Review subdivision plans, site plans, and zoning amendment requests in accordance with the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances

Conduct studies and make recommendations on long-range planning issues and infrastructure improvements
-
Promote sound, orderly development consistent with the character of Port Deposit

Meetings:
The Board meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6:00pm; meetings are cancelled if there are no applications to review or no business to discuss.
